Course Title: Ninth Grade Guidance Program
To promote and enhance student learning in academic, career and personal development
Course Objectives: |
Performance Indicators: |
*Make a smooth transition from middle school *Understand high school expectations and achieve school success by completing courses that appropriately engage and challenge them *Develop decision making skills and acquire interpersonal skills to assist them in respecting self and others
*Acquire skills to improve learning *Identify resource people in the school/community and learn how to access their help
*Learn how to access and utilize technological resources *Explore interests and begin to understand the relationship between school and the world of work
*Select courses commensurate with ability/future goals *Understand decision-making and responsibility as an integral part of goal setting, as well as identify goals. Set priorities and manage their own progress
*Have parents understand high school expectations
*Provide a welcoming environment to access guidance and career services

The student will: *Attend Quarter 1 developmental guidance sessions *Earn enough credits to be a sophomore *Become a good school citizen
*Learn about Learning Centers & use agenda *Utilize resource people as necessary
*Become familiar with a variety of computer software, web-based resources and the guidance web site *Complete computer career interest inventory
*Meet individually with guidance counselor to plan appropriate course selection *Make good choices in goal setting and working toward goal setting
*Encourage parents to participate in Ninth Grade Parents' Orientation Night
*Feel comfortable enough to visit the guidance office frequently *Participate in individual counseling sessions as needed

To investigate careers and make the connections between courses and the world of work

*Continue investigation of career with Harrinton O’Shea Interest Inventory *Become exposed to career trends, employment opportunities and pathways to achieve success *Select courses that will allow continued course exploration
*Begin to prepare for the post-secondary education testing sequence *Continue to explore technical careers *Take advantage of opportunities to develop decision making skills to make appropriate choices affecting physical, social and economic health, and acquire interpersonal skills *Provide a welcoming
environment to access guidance and career opportunities
