MISSION STATEMENT

Welcome to the Science Department at South Kingstown High School where we believe that all students are entitled to a learning environment that provides opportunities to investigate, explore, and analyze concepts of scientific systems, cycles, models, and the nature of science.  Exposure to this environment enhances the opportunity for the application of these concepts to the practice of inquiry, arguing ideas, and predicting results; all of which develop the practice of good scientific habits of mind. We believe that the use of technology is an integral component of scientific and intellectual inquiry.

CURRICULUM

The Science Department at South Kingstown High School recognizes that a general science curriculum is an integral component of the liberal arts education offered at the High School.  The need to expand the scientific and technological capabilities of our society relies on the cultivation of the science and technology backgrounds of its citizens. It also requires an increase in the number of professionals that can specialize in scientific/technical subjects, and who will therefore help to move society forward in this area.  The curriculum (listed below) of our core science classes (biology, chemistry, physics) are aligned to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) adopted by the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE).  Our program contains sufficient depth and breadth to satisfy the science educational requirements of any student profile, and thereby represents a significant component in the development of their scientific and technological literacy, and to their general education.

To achieve proficiency on the Next Generation Science Assessment (the current State science assessment, taken at the end of 11th grade) the science department recommends that students successfully complete three courses beginning in the 9th grade.  These include:  Biology, Chemistry, and one additional laboratory science course (Earth & Space Science is recommended). Students may also wish to pursue other areas of interest in science and technology and there are a wide variety of elective courses for those students interested in further study. Students with an active interest in science may concurrently complete additional science courses many of which offer honors, AP,  and/or college credit.  Our main objective is to produce graduates who are critical thinkers, are scientifically literate, and have an appreciation for the role of science in our world.
