South Kingstown High School
Science Department
Welcome to the Science Department where we believe that all students are entitled to a learning environment that provides opportunities to investigate, explore and analyze concepts of systems, cycles, models and the nature of science. Exposure to this environment enhances the opportunity for the application of these concepts to the practice of inquiry, arguing ideas and predicting results; all of which develop the practice of good habits of mind. We believe that the use of technology is an integral component of scientific and intellectual inquiry.
The science department at South Kingstown High School recognizes that a general science curriculum is an integral component of the liberal arts education offered at the High School. The school's mission statement focuses on the need to provide students with the skills to become productive and responsible citizens in a global society. The rapidly expanding technical character of this global society requires a substantial development in the science and technology backgrounds of its citizens generally, if they are to become responsible. It also requires an increase in the number of professionals that can specialize in technical subjects, and who will therefore help to move society forward in this arena. Our program sustains sufficient depth and breadth to satisfy the
science educational requirements of any student profile, and thereby represents a significant component to their general education.
To acheive proficiency on the NECAP Science Assessment students must take 3 core courses beginning in the 9th grade. These include: Earth Systems and Space Science, Biology, & Chemistry. Students may also wish to persue other areas of interest in science and there are a wide variety of elective courses for those students interested in studying further. Students with an active interest in science may take additional science courses ("double up") after their 9th grade year.
