One for Me...One for You
Through the South Kingstown Education Foundation, I received a grant that I wrote titled, “One for me…One for you” in the amount of $750.00. The grant aimed at encouraging family involvement in children’s reading. When writing the grant, I referenced the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 which recognizes that parents are their child’s first and most important teachers and that in order for children to be successful in school, families need to get actively involved in their children’s learning. Not only do parents need to get actively involved early on, but they also need to stay involved throughout their children’s educational career. Reflecting on the success that I evidenced from establishing a classroom library a few years back, I decided to carry the idea of a
classroom library over into the beginning of a home library for all of my students and their families. By providing students with an interest inventory as to their preferences in texts and taking into consideration their reading levels, I ordered two copies of the same book; one book was for the child and the other book was for the family member. I ordered them with the assumption/hope that parents and their child would read the book and interact with the text together.
Check out the pictures from the gathering that took place on Friday, January 18, 2008 from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm in room 317 of South Kingstown High School to distribute selected texts. Pizza, refreshments, and more were served for all and door prizes were awarded to the first 10 family members that arrived.
