Comprehension Tools
Recent research on comprehension shows that to enhance student understanding of a text or concepts within a text, students should interact with the text by using active reading strategies throughout the reading process!! This should be done before, during, and after reading. There are several comprehension strategies that you can use to help support your students’/child's understanding of the text. Here are just a few:
Prior to the reading of a text:
1) KWL Chart
2) Anticipation Guides
3) Book Walk
4) Word Wall
5) Concept Mapping
6) Making Predictions
These strategies will help students to set purposes for reading, activate prior knowledge, develop questions, and make predictions for the acquisition of new content in a given discipline.
During reading of text:
1) Thinking Aloud (during a READ ALOUD- to comment, question, or connect with text)
2) Interactive Reading Guide
3) Questioning the Author
4) Learning logs/ Reading logs
5) Jigsaw Activities
These strategies will allow the student to monitor their comprehension and confirm/alter predictions.
After reading of a text:
1) Revisit KWL or Anticipation Guide
2) Discussion Web
3) Question-Answer Relationships
4) Summarize
5) Event Mapping
6) Draw Conclusions
7) Make Inferences
These strategies will foster the student’s understanding of the text by giving them opportunities to evaluate and organize the information while determining the main ideas.
