PHYSICAL EDUCATION GRADING

2010-2011

Grading:

It is our belief that all students need to be in class and be on time in order to achieve optimum benefits from physical education. Students must earn eight credits (two per year) in P.E. to graduate from South Kingstown High School. Since we are a Pass/Fail subject (S = satisfactory & U = unsatisfactory) it is extremely important that students be present in class. Grading is based on attendance, participation, and effort as well as meeting the national standards in physical education. Written work may also be incorporated in the grading system.

Attendance Policy:

The Physical Education department has implemented a change for attendance in P.E. Previously, students were able to make-up numerous classes at the end of each quarter. Also, some teachers had different requirements for class make-ups and grading procedures which caused many inconsistencies. We have designed a policy we feel will be consistent and fair for all students enrolled in physical education. Each student is allowed five excuses for missed classes per quarter. Student excuses include: being absent from school, field trips, not being appropriately dressed for class, not actively participating in class, and being ill without a doctor’s note. In addition, only two make-up classes will be allowed per quarter by each student. Therefore if a student misses seven classes in a quarter, he/she must make-up two classes before the end of the quarter or he/she will fail P.E. for that quarter. All make-ups will take place towards the end of the quarter or during learning center. Any student accumulating eight missed classes (regardless of any make-ups) will automatically fail P.E. for that quarter and will be required to re-take the quarter of P.E. at a later time. All make-up days will be announced by the student’s teacher ahead of time so students can plan accordingly.  Exceptions may be granted for extenuating circumstances. This attendance policy will not impact students who miss five or fewer classes per quarter.

Medical Excuses:

If a student brings a medical excuse for reasons which prohibit their participation in class, it will not count towards the absence total. While notes from parents help to justify their son/daughter’s absence from class, they do count towards the five absences. A student may also receive a medical for the entire quarter. If this occurs, a student does not need to re-take the quarter of P.E. however credit will not be granted and may only be a concern if the student does not have enough credits for graduation.  In order to receive a grade and credit, a student must participate in 60% of class activities when a medical note has been provided.
