Senior Bulletin #3 South Kingstown H.S. Guidance Dept. 13 October 2011
**A quick review of a couple of items from our Senior Post-planning Assembly on September 21st: For any NON-COMMON APPLICATION SCHOOLS you must offer to provide stamped, addressed legal-sized envelopes for the teachers who will be writing LETTERS OF RECOMMMENDATION for you (one envelope for each college to each teacher). In addition, you must complete the top sections of any required teacher recommendation forms before you hand them to your instructors. Most of you are doing Common Application. Remind your teacher to do their recommendation online. As the applicant follow the instructions through the Common App. process.
**Likewise, for any NON-COMMON APPLICATION SCHOOLS you must give two legal-sized addressed envelopes and one first-class stamp to your counselor along with the SENIOR OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPT REQUEST FORM (orange) for each school in order to have your application materials processed. We have made copies of this required form! They are
on the counter in the office. This is for NON COMMON APPLICATIONS ONLY!!
**Please note that some post-secondary institutions require that a copy of a GRADED ESSAY for your application.
**Students enrolled in courses eligible for CONCURRENT ENROLLMENT CREDITS through Rhode Island College have the opportunity to earn college credits from RIC while remaining physically here in at SKHS. See your counselor for further details.
**The NCAA CLEARINGHOUSE requires that seniors who plan to participate in intercollegiate athletics at a NCAA Division I or II school access the registration materials at the clearinghouse web site at www.ncaaclearinghouse.net. From the home page, you can then click on “Prospective Student-Athletes,” which will link to the necessary information. Use a credit
card to register and print out two sheets, one entitled “preliminary” and one “final.” These two sheets must be given to Mrs. McCallig, who will then send your official transcript to the Clearinghouse. We have also learned that you must “code in” 9999 and pay to have your scores sent in order for the NCAA Clearinghouse to get your official SAT scores. This is not a recruiting service; it is required for participation in Division I/II intercollegiate athletics.
**Mr. Lynch has also clarified for us that potential athletes cannot go on “OFFICIAL VISITS” until they have registered with the NCAA Clearinghouse. Also, for “official visits” athletes must take “unofficial” copies of both current transcript and SAT/ACT scores. You can obtain unofficial transcripts from Mrs. Marchessault (you must give her at least a day’s notice), and make copies of the score reports you received at home from the College Board and/or ACT.
**For those of you who may not have been able to attend the sessions with COLLEGE REPRESENTATIVES, our CARES volunteers have established a system whereby they place the notes they take from each college session into a special notebook. This blue book is located right in the middle of the mid-section of the shelves in the guidance suite. In order for everyone to have access to this material, we ask that you return the book to the shelf when you are done.
**In the next couple of months, South Kingstown students have several days during which you will not be in attendance at school. Please make note of the dates in school calendar. These days off would be a good time for you to schedule ON-CAMPUS VISITS. Please note that most post-secondary schools are closed for Thanksgiving, so although you are also not in school for Thursday and Friday, the 24th and 25th, you will probably not be able to make appointments for tours or information sessions on those dates.
**PLANNING AHEAD will allow you to use these dates to visit colleges/universities when they are in session. Call for information on campus tours and/or information sessions and plan ahead by coming up with questions to ask “on tour.” One question that covers a lot of ground is: “How large is your smallest lecture room on campus?” One school might have a hall seating 750 with video access to an adjoining room for 500 more students while another might have a lecture room for 75. You will come up with other questions as you begin to visit campuses.
**As we stated at our senior meeting on September 20th, you should schedule an APPOINTMENT with your school counselor to discuss future plans. You will definitely be somewhere at this time next year, so let's make plans to line up options as soon as possible. See your counselor for a packet if you missed this very important meeting.
**The POST-SECONDARY PLANNING PROCESS can be a little intimidating, sort of confusing, full of pressure/stress, and very exciting. In fact, it can be all of these at once! Please help us to help you by:
Also, please refer to LOOKING AHEAD TO YOUR FUTURE, a “booklet” that we discussed with you last year in Advisory. It is available on-line on the Guidance website and in hard copy in limited quantities; see your counselor if you’d like one!
**Visiting campuses while students are there is the best way to see firsthand what the view books and materials have described. You will be able to feel the atmosphere and to make better choices.
**The DEADLINE MYTH NEEDS TO BE DEFLATED! Colleges will accept and definitely would prefer applications as soon as possible. In fact, many schools will evaluate your credentials and notify you even as soon as the first of the year although you will have until May 1st to decide if you want to "accept the acceptance." Remember that College Board sends out your SAT scores. Do not send a paper copy unless the collge specifically requests it.
**URI's TALENT DEVELOPMENT (TD), RIC's PREPARATORY ENROLLMENT PROGRAM (PEP), and CCRI's ACCESS programs assist
students with ability and potential and who are potentially under-qualified as regular-application candidates because of economic, social, and/or academic background. See Mrs. Majeika or your counselor for more details...! Application deadlines and college rep visit dates will be announced. URI TD will be visiting soon to discuss their program with interested students; stay tuned for date and time of their visit!
**The COMMON APPLICATION, by which you may apply to any of over 400 specific colleges and universities, is available to you at www.commonapp.org. If you choose to use this method, it is your responsibility to make enough copies of the entire form because you will need one copy for each college to which you are applying. Please understand that many of these same colleges also have their own specific college forms that may appear to be the same common form but may have an additional essay or could require a second teacher recommendation or/letter.
By agreeing to use the CAF, colleges agree to "give equal consideration" to the form. If you are concerned about this aspect, it is an excellent question for an interview or information session. Some colleges are set up to receive the Common Application electronically, or you can download it and print it out. Keep a copy for your files since the Common Application is the application for the Smith Scholarship; more details will follow shortly on this local scholarship.
**SOME HOUSEKEEPING DETAILS---A profile with SKHS academic data will accompany each application. Our school address is 215 Columbia Street, Wakefield, RI 02879, the phone number is 401-360-1038, the FAX number is 401-360-1462, the high school/CEEB/ETS/ACT Code is 400230. You began your high-school career with us in September of 2006 and your graduation is tentatively scheduled for June 15th. Your counselors by student alphabet are: Cherylann Leaver, Norma Brooks, Renee Lamontagne, Barbara Crudale, and Anahid Avedesian.
**SAT PREP INFORMATION can be found at www.collegeboard.com and at www.act.org. We
also have a handout on Revolution Prep, a six-week program that is offered right here at SKHS; copies are available in the guidance office.
**Securing an official transcript, counselor letter, and counselor form for each school must be done by completing an ORANGE form, attaching two legal-size envelopes and two stamps for each school, and giving any other school report/transcript request college forms to your school counselor. This is for NON COMMON APPLICATIONS ONLY!! PARENTAL RELEASE FORMS must be completed and
returned to Mrs. McCallig before your applications can be processed. Once again, you will need to see your individual counselor for specific details.

To find out which colleges and universities are visiting THIS WEEK and in the near future, please see the Weekly Bulletin posted in your advisory; as always, you must secure teacher permission ahead of time or this visit will be considered a class cut!
