Read below to learn about the SKHS Graduation Portfolio.

SKHS Graduation Portfolio
The portfolio is a reflective and meaningful showcase of the achievement of school-wide expectations, personal growth and academic growth that represents the diverse interests and achievements of each student.

Why does your child need to complete a Graduation Portfolio?
The Rhode Island Department of Education changed the guidelines for earning a high school diploma.  Beginning with the class of 2008, students are required to show proficiency in six core areas (Mathematics, English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Technology and Fine Arts).  Each high school selected two pathways for students to demonstrate proficiency based on the needs of the school.  Students at SKHS will complete comprehensive course examinations and a graduation portfolio. Students demonstrate proficiency in the six core areas by submitting assignments to their portfolio that are aligned to the school's eight Student Learning Expectations (SLEs).

How does your child learn about the Graduation Portfolio?
Every student takes a quarter course each year called the SK series class (SK 101 to SK 104).  Students are provided with instruction and time to work on their Graduation Portofolio in this class.  Read more about the SK classes (see sidebar).

How do portfolio assignments connect to course work?
The portfolio is a collection of work which demonstrates each student’s ability to apply what he/she has learned, in a variety of subjects, throughout their high school career.   Teachers provide one portfolio worthy assignment per quarter.  Teachers identify the specific assignments that are considered portfolio worthy opportunities, at the beginning of the school year, for their students.  An assignment for the portfolio is not extra work; it is embedded within the coursework of the class.

How do you as a parent/guardian learn about the Graduation Portfolio?
Each year the school offers an evening for parents to come hear about the Graduation Portfolio and ask questions.  The presentations are designed for each graduating class and occur during the quarter that the student is enrolled in the SK class.
Read more information about the portfolio and descriptions of documents (see sidebar Information).  Documents students might need for the Portfolio are available to download.  Scroll down or see sidebar (Documents).
